Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Is global warming real?

Why should I care about global warming?

Regardless of if you care or not, global warming has and will impact your life.

In this article we will uncover the following:

  • What is global warming?

  • What causes global warming?

  • What does global warming effect?

What is Global Warming

Global warming is the long-term heating of the Earth’s surface temperature [1]. Global warming is a naturally occurring event that has been observed since the pre-industrial period in the 1800’s (1850-1900). Humans are the main contributors to increased global warming temperatures on the planet.

Human activities are estimated to have increased Earth’s global average temperature by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. It is estimated that Earth’s average temperature increases by .36 degrees Fahrenheit per decade[1].

What Causes Global Warming

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere [2]. Greenhouse gases allow the sunlight (infrared radiation) to reach the atmosphere but do not let them leave the atmosphere. Human release a mass of greenhouse gases by the way of burning fossil fuels. The main greenhouse gases are as followed:

  • carbon dioxide

  • methane

  • nitrous oxide

  • chlorofluorocarbons

  • ozone

  • water vapor

Greenhouse gases are naturally occurring in the Earth’s atmosphere. The natural “greenhouse effect” is caused by greenhouse gases that are present in the atmosphere. Without the natural greenhouse effect, the earth’s average temperature would be 91 degrees Fahrenheit cooler and not sustainable for human life [3].

How Can You Reduce Your Carbon Footprint( (Answer at end of article)

  • Reduce what I use

  • Reuse what I can

  • Recycle & Compost when I can

  • All of the above

What Does Global Warming Effect

Global warming effects climate change. Climate change is an unusual change in average weather patterns in a region over a long period of time [4]. When the earth’s surface heats up it affects [5]:

  • human health

  • wildlife

  • environment

  • food supply

  • weather patterns

  • infrastructure

As the Earth’s surface temperature rises, life for humans becomes less sustainable. When Earth is affected, humans are affected.
