What is Earth Day?

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Earth Day should be celebrated every day.

Earth Day is more about doing rather than just saying.

But, what exactly does one do on Earth Day?

In this article we will dive into the following:

  • What is Earth Day?

  • Why did Earth Day start?

  • How do you celebrate Earth Day?

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22 to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage individuals to take action to protect the planet. On Earth Day, individuals, organizations, and governments around the world collaborate to take action on a range of environmental issues such as:

  • climate change

  • pollution

  • deforestation

  • species extinction

Some popular activities on Earth Day are:

  • educational seminars and workshops

  • clean up events

  • tree plantings

  • eco-friendly campaigns

These events reenforce the importance of becoming aware of how we interact with our environment and how to become more sustainable.

Why did Earth Day start?

Earth Day was founded as an environmental awareness event on April 22, 1970, by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. Senator Nelson was inspired to create Earth Day after witnessing the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969, which devastated the local environment and wildlife. Before 1970, there were no environmental rules or regulations for any organization or individuals and no technology or mechanisms to protect the earth.

Senator Gaylord Nelson chose April 22 as the date for Earth Day because it falls between Spring Break and final exams in most colleges and universities. Senator Nelson believed that students would be a key demographic in organizing and participating in the event.

The first Earth Day was a colossal success, with 20 million Americans participating in rallies, teach-ins, and other environmental events across the country. With environmental issues now at the forefront of the national media, congress took action. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or EPA was created in December 1970 after receiving approval from Congress as a new federal agency to address environmental issues. Ultimately, this led to the creation of important environmental protection laws such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

How do you celebrate Earth Day?

The goal of Earth Day is to promote environmental awareness and encourage individuals to take steps to reduce their impact on the planet. By working closely together, individuals and communities can make a positive impact on the environment and help ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 but should be acknowledged every day.

Here are 5 simple ways to celebrate Earth Day and make a positive impact on the environment:

1. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

One of the biggest contributors to climate change is carbon emissions from fossil fuels. You can help reduce your carbon footprint by making small changes in your daily life, such as using public transportation or carpooling, turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and switching to energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.

2. Plant a Tree

Trees play a critical role in the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and providing habitat for wildlife. Planting a tree in your yard or community can help reduce the effects of climate change and improve air quality.

3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reducing your waste is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment. You can start by using reusable water bottles and shopping bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and composting food waste. Recycling is also an important way to reduce waste and conserve resources.

4. Support Local and Sustainable Agriculture

Food production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental issues. Supporting local and sustainable agriculture can help reduce your carbon footprint and support local economies. Consider shopping at farmers' markets and shopping for in-season produce.

5. Advocate for the Environment

One of the most important ways to make a difference is by advocating for the environment. This can involve contacting elected officials, supporting environmental organizations, and participating in local environmental initiatives. By working together, we can make a positive impact on the planet and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
